Think in Systems. Transform with Purpose
Many digital transformations stall before a single tool is bought, and not because of the technology. Six steps for thinking in systems and bringing people along, plus what a transformation really needs.
Many digital transformations stall before a single tool is bought. Not because of technology. Because of how we think, and how we bring people along.
Here is the journey in six steps.
1. Think in systems
Every decision has first, second and third order consequences. Ask “and then what?” before you write the objective.
2. Know the three levels
- Digitization is paper to digital.
- Digitalization is a better process.
- Transformation is a new way of creating value.
Business shift first, technology second.
3. Pick your levers
Customer, operations, business model, data, people, tech. Not all at once.
4. Follow the roadmap
Signal
→ Pain point
→ Solution
→ Tools
→ Pilot
→ Scale
→ Measure
Start from the problem, never the tool. End by checking the outcome you wrote in step 1.
5. Design for people
Empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test. Empathize and define at the pain point. Prototype and test at the pilot.
6. Manage the change
Tools don’t change companies. People do. Start change management on day one, not at go-live.
My takeaways: what a transformation really needs
- A clear business objective, written as an outcome and not an activity.
- Leaders who sponsor the change and explain the why.
- A real, felt problem to solve, not a tool looking for a use.
- Small pilots with real users before scaling.
- Users involved from day one, not trained at the end.
- Adoption tracked as a success measure, not just go-live.
- Patience: transformation is a journey, not a project with an end date.
